The three steps process towards excellence in skills coaching and training system is developed and maintained by Skills Finland. The system helps to keep up Finnish expertise, skilfulness and competence. The training of young professionals is designed and carried out in cooperation with vocational education and training providers and business life.

The training offers required methods and tools to success in international skills competitions by creating new teaching models and methods in order to increase the status and attractiveness of vocational training and to improve cooperation between vocational training and working life. For young people the most significant objective is to develop their vocational skills and professional pride towards success in the field of their trade.

The excellence in skills training is carried out in a three steps model. The basic training is initiated by selecting a group of motivated, skilled young people of each trade.  The basic training phase concentrates on vocational basic training, and the idea is that it will be provided for as many young professionals as possible. The most advanced candidates are then selected to go on further in the next step in the training, where the practical training is continued more intensively. This step of training is targeted at developing the special skills on individual basis set as a goal for the international skills competition; WorldSkills, EuroSkills and Abilympics. The competitors for the national team are selected at the end of this second step of training

The aim of the training at the national team level is to improvement and refining the professional skills, mastery of the trade and mental and physical skills as well as ability to analyze problems. This will make it possible to compete in international skills competitions with the other top professionals. Furthermore, the training is intensified to gain the required routines, speed and quality.

The excellence in skills training system is continuously developed in cooperation with vocational education and training providers, working life and research centres. The coaches and trainers are in key position and the training of trainers is very much highlighted. The work is mainly done with funding of the European Social Fund ( ESF) . The funding covers the years 2002-2010.
